چکیده

Thermoreversible gelcasting, a near-net-shape processing technique, is demonstrated here for titanium. The gelcasting system is composed of TiH2 particles suspended in a triblock copolymer gel that behaves as a viscous liquid above 56 C and an elastic solid at room temperature, a temperature-dependent transition that is fully reversible when solvent is present. Organic pyrolysis to remove the gel followed by vacuum sintering to densify the Ti powders (produced by decomposition of the hydride) results in titanium with near full density and low contamination. Incorporation of polypropylene and poly(methyl methacrylate) space-holder particles into the gel results in titanium with controlled porosities up to 44 vol.% and with low contamination. These foams exhibit tailorable stiffness and strength, together with excellent compressive ductility and energy absorption. 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pore Formation Process of Porous Ti3SiC2 Fabricated by Reactive Sintering

Porous Ti3SiC2 was fabricated with high purity, 99.4 vol %, through reactive sintering of titanium hydride (TiH2), silicon (Si) and graphite (C) elemental powders. The reaction procedures and the pore structure evolution during the sintering process were systematically studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Our results show that the formation of Ti3SiC2 from ...

Porous NiTi alloy prepared from elemental powder sintering

An elemental powder sintering (EPS) technique has been developed for the synthesis of porous NiTi alloy, in which Ni and Ti powders are used as the reactants and TiH2 powder is added as a pore-forming agent and active agent. Effects of various experimental parameters (sintering temperature, sintering time, and TiH2 content) on the porosity, pore size and pore distribution as well as phase compo...

An in situ Study of NiTi Powder Sintering Using Neutron Diffraction

This study investigates phase transformation and mechanical properties of porous NiTi alloys using two different powder compacts (i.e., Ni/Ti and Ni/TiH2) by a conventional press-and-sinter means. The compacted powder mixtures were sintered in vacuum at a final temperature of 1373 K. The phase evolution was performed by in situ neutron diffraction upon sintering and cooling. The predominant pha...

Characterization of In-Situ Cu–TiH2–C and Cu–Ti–C Nanocomposites Produced by Mechanical Milling and Spark Plasma Sintering

This study focuses on the fabrication and microstructural investigation of Cu–TiH2–C and Cu–Ti–C nanocomposites with different volume fractions (10% and 20%) of TiC. Two mixtures of powders were ball milled for 10 h, consequently consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 900 and 1000 ◦C producing bulk materials with relative densities of 95–97%. The evolution process of TiC formation duri...

Changes in Liver Contents of Lipid Fractions Following Titanium Exposure

The potential to cause tissue damage by metal ions is the matter of widespread investigation. Titanium salts are widely used in industry for ceramic painting, in pharmacy for tablet coating and making chemical sunscreens and in medicine as photo catalysts with bactericidal activity. This may address the idea that the exposure to these salts could play a role in metabolic disorders. In this stud...
